Parrotlet Guide
About
Parrotlets
As the name suggests, Parrotlets are one of the
smallest parrots available, at 5½ inches long, but they offer
all of the features available in those parrots with larger
packages. They are affectionate, may learn to talk and take up
much less room than the big parrots. They can get feisty, as
well, but again, in a smaller version of the large parrots.
These birds are very inquisitive and very small, so they
should always be supervised when out of their cages. Because
of their energy, parrotlets should be provided with a roomy
cage and plenty of toys.
Parrotlets are commonly available in two different species,
although there is a total of seven. The Pacific parrotlets
(Forpus coelestis) are distinguished by colored eye
streaks -- blue in the males, and all blue accents are
replaced with emerald green on the females. Green-rumped
parrotlets (F. passerinus) are slightly smaller than
the Pacifics and have subspecies. General coloration is apple
green, and the foreheads of both males and females are light
yellow, with the females slightly even more yellow. The males
have blue accent feathers on their wings, and the females have
green markings
instead.
